Can cats and dogs be transgender

Transgender pets

When we look at the history, we don’t find many references. It is only in the present times that people are identifying trans animals and talking more about their wellbeing. Even scientific literatures are being worked upon currently. People and vets over the years have not paid importance to the gender identities of pets. Spaying, neutering, looking into any health and behavioral changes under the care of an experienced veterinarian is a must.

We need to understand unless a pet is born with some genitalia defects that prevent it from living a healthy life, it’s better to not touch them.

Unless they have issues with their physiological formation, they are not giving you the permission to make any changes in them.

Trans pets surgeries, as well as hormonal treatments, are available for transgender animals. If you want more information about it, you can go through the below sections.

Can cats and dogs be transgender?

A question that has popped up in recent years with the mass revolution going around in the human community is: can cats and dogs be transgender?

Most scientific communities are oblivious to the existence of transgender cats and dogs, so answering the question as to whether cats and dogs can be transgender is still a long haul from here. It is only recently that such questions have caught up with people.

Experiments have just begun, and so have surgeries.

The answer to this question, however, is yes. Yes, cats and dogs can be transgender and, like us, have different sexual orientations from the way they are born.

Only in 2000 was Thomas, a male cat, reported to show female behavior.

In 2003, a cat named Mew, born as a male, was seen behaving like a female.

The genetic basis of transgender individuals

Genetically, transgender pets are like transgender humans.

While a male is XY and a female is XX variant, what or how is a transgender person arranged with their chromosomes?

But until recently, only the CYP17 gene has been getting the limelight, and it seems to be the reason behind transsexuality in trans men.

Scientists have observed that even those with an XX chromosome disposition can be male.

Similarly, the XY disposition can give birth to a female. We call them alpha males and females.

The SRY gene responsible for sex differentiation is located on the Y chromosome. However, Goodfellow and his group of scientists and researchers observed the same gene in 50 X chromosomes from 50 different individuals.

They also observed that if there is a single amino acid change in the SRY gene from methionine to isoleucine, it will lead to the generation of a female embryo with XY chromosomal orientation.

The research in this regard is still ongoing, and the genetic variation will substantiate the presence of differently oriented individuals. It will help increase the acceptance rate of individuals making different sexual choices than many others. A firm scientific base will also broaden the outlook and improve the chances of diversified living, making the Earth a bit better to live on.

Trans Pets and Surgeries

Gender change surgery for pets is a rare and not widely recognized practice in the veterinary or scientific communities. While there are anecdotal reports of such surgeries, they are not commonly available or recommended. The concept of “trans pets” and sex change treatments for animals is not well-documented in scientific literature or mainstream discourse.

Only a few cases have been documented so far around gender reassignment surgeries in pets.

Few of the listed names are;

  • Jack Russell terrier named Molly
  • a cat named Piglet
  • a German Shepherd named Bishop

These surgeries were primarily performed to address medical conditions, such as bladder stones, and were successful in saving the pets’ lives[1][2][3][5][7][8][9]. The recovery and healthy life of the pet after gender reassignment surgery are crucial, and the pets in these cases made a full recovery.

What is gender reassignment surgery for pets?

Gender change surgery for pets is a rare and not widely recognized practice in the veterinary or scientific communities. While there are anecdotal reports of such surgeries, they are not commonly available or recommended. The concept of “trans pets” and sex change treatments for animals is not well-documented in scientific literature or mainstream discourse.

Sex Change Hormones used in pets

While hormonal treatments for sex change in pets are not widely recognized or practiced in the veterinary field, there are some hormonal treatments used to address medical conditions in pets. For example,

  • Diethylstilbestrol (DES) and/or Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) are the prescription drugs for treatment of urethral sphincter mechanism incontinence in female dogs [5].
  • Hypoestrogenism in spayed female dogs may also be treated with diethylstilbestrol [5].
  • Methyltestosterone and testosterone propionate is used for treating hypoandrogenism in male dogs [5].

It’s essential to note that these veterinarians can prescribe a treatment only after a proper diagnosis and must aim at improving the health and well-being of the animal, not for gender reassignment purposes. The concept of “trans pets” and sex change treatments for animals is not well-documented in scientific literature or mainstream discourse [1][2][3][5].

There are several hormones that are commonly used in the treatment of transgender pets, particularly dogs and cats.

Some hormones commonly used in pets are being described vividly below:

1. Estrogen: Estrogen is used to feminize transgender female pets. Testosterone level reduction in the body is the aim and promoting the growth of female sexual characteristics is the secondary aim. Estrogen formulations are many including injections, pills, and topical creams.

2. Testosterone: Testosterone is used to masculinize transgender male pets. To change a pet into a male, testosterone plays a crucial role. Testosterone formulations include injections, pills, and topical creams.

3. Anti-androgens: Anti-androgens serve to block the impact of testosterone in the body. They are often used in conjunction with estrogen to help feminize transgender female pets. Common anti-androgens in are spironolactone and finasteride, used on pets.

4. Progesterone: Progesterone helps maintain pregnancy in female animals. It works to bring down uterine infection risks and can reduce breast cancer risk in transgender female pets.

5. GnRH agonists: GnRH agonists prevent sex hormone formation in the body of even animals. They function in reducing the levels of testosterone in transgender female pets and also work on the levels of estrogen in transgender male pets.

Since informed consent is not possible in pets, sex change is still a very new practice in transgender pets. Several ongoing researches into the safety and efficacy of different hormone regimens are still being worked out. It’s important that the pet owner and the vet work in close association when determining the best course of treatment for the pet.

Dose for sex change hormone in pets

Several factors are considered when planning for the hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

  • pet’s weight,
  • age, and
  • sex, as well as the
  • desired effects of the hormone therapy

The process of determining the appropriate dose of sex hormones for a pet is often iterative and may require monitoring and adjustments over time. Here are some general steps that a veterinarian may follow when determining the dosing for a pet:

Primary examinationVet will undertake medical history of the pet, including information about the pet’s gender, age, weight, and any pre-existing medical conditions.
Blood testingcurrent hormone levels including testosterone and estrogen are necessary and are considered for dose determination
Assessment of the desired effectsdesired effects of the hormone therapy like the aim of the therapy must be determined. E.g aggression reduction, gender dysphoria or increase fertility levels are certain targeted parameters
Hormone selectionselect the appropriate sex hormone to use for HRT. For feminization, estrogen and masculinization, testosterone is chosen
Choose the starting dosebased on the pet’s weight, age, and sex and starting dose is always lower than the maintenance dose
Monitoring, dosing adjustment and titration of doseschanges in behavior, physical examination findings, and blood test results are considered before working around the dose. Dose adjustment done as per the risk, benefit ratio assessment.
Ongoing monitoringVeterinarian will continue to monitor the pet’s hormone levels and keep up with the dose adjustment to maintain the desired effects.

Careful monitoring and individualized dosing is a must for pets undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT). If not done the right way, the pet might lose their lives.

The time duration for sex change in pets can vary depending on the

  • individual pet species,
  • the type of sex change being performed, and
  • the veterinarian’s protocol.

Recovery phase duration for gender reassignment surgery in pets

Sex change surgery in pets just like in humans is a complex and multi-step process that can spread upto several months and even go upto a year or more to complete. A general overview of the sex change timeline in pets is given below:

Stages of sex change processDeterminants of the processDuration of time for the process
Pre-surgical evaluationphysical examination, blood tests, and other diagnostic testsSeveral weeks to months
Hormone therapyHormonal therapy type determined and givenseveral months to a year
Surgerysex change surgeryseveral hours to complete
Recoverypet will need time to recover and healseveral weeks to a few months
Post-surgical careongoing care and monitoringseveral months to a year or more

It is a complex and controversial topic as informed consent of the pet is not possible in this. The only time a pet owner can give a go ahead is when there are certain complications that can be deleterious for the pet’s life. The ethical considerations surrounding sex change surgery in pets’ highly debatable topics still, and carefully weighing the potential risks and benefits before making a decision is of utmost importance. After all, every life matters equally

Risks of gender reassignment surgery in pets

Gender reassignment surgery in pets, also known as perineal urethrostomy (PU) is done in male cats. It is a surgical procedure that is sometimes done to address certain complex medical conditions.

In male cats, PU surgery involves removing the penis and creating a new opening for urination, which is comparable to human sexual reassignment surgery. The procedure is considered a salvage procedure and is typically performed to relieve urinary obstructions.

Complications can occur from PU surgery and include chronic urinary tract infections or possible urinary leakage/incontinence [1].

In dogs, surgical sterilization like gonadectomy is common and has been associated with the pets behavioral.

The risks and benefits of gonadectomy are not clear and are widely debated still, while the decision to perform the surgery should be made on a case-by-case basis.

Factors like age, breed, sex, intended use, household environment, and the dog’s temperament must be considered [2].

Only in rare cases, intersex pets have been noted, and gender reassignment surgery performed to address medical conditions in these cases are also rare. [4][5][6][8].

How well is the recovery of a pet after treatment?

Gender reassignment surgery for pets is a rare and not widely recognized practice in the veterinary or scientific communities. While there are anecdotal reports of such surgeries, they are not commonly available or recommended. The concept of “trans pets” and sex change treatments for animals is not well-documented in scientific literature or mainstream discourse.

After all, if they don’t suffer from their differently built formations, there is no need to change them in any way.

Can cats and dogs be transgender

What are examples of transgender animals?

Can cats or dogs be transgender? It is a question many are asking, but no one is asking what other animals can show transgender varieties. It can be seen in every single animal existing on Earth. You heard it right. Reptilian species like snakes, bearded dragons, and lizards show it; lions, olive colobus, tigers, cats, and dogs, even spotted hyenas, show it. Aquatic mammals are just being explored, and only a few have been studied for long. Though it has not been totally observed, they are seen in clownfish, and even Crepidula fornicata has shown such an orientation or such orientation has been studied.

What animal species has 3 genders?

If you stop asking can a dog or a cat be transgender, you can look around and find a whole new world where 3 genders exist in many animal kingdoms.

  • Ants
  • Bees and wasps
  • Aphids
  • Spotted hyenas
  • Worms and even algae have 3 genders.
What species has 7 sexes?

Tetrahymena thermophile is an organism with 7 sexes where each type can mate with another except their own type.

Can animals be intersex?

There are many animals that can be intersex and several domestic animals have been described to be having both sexes. True hermaphrodites are rare but they do exist and most have exhibited traits similar to humans.

Only if they show some clinical issues, it would be essential to make them undergo changes like in case of hermaphrodites, they might be having some difficult times. In such cases, alone, it comes under the jurisdiction of the pet owner to save the pets life. If it is not the case, then making the pet undergo such a surgery is still a debatable topic in terms of ethics and wellbeing of an animal.

Transgender Pets

Transgender pets

We have a bunch of cats we never intended to pee on. One female cat, somewhere around three years old, jumped upon my mother’s bed, startling her in the middle of the night. It was the beginning of her coming. We could never afford pets, let alone know more about transgender pets.

We began liking her docile nature, and Toto soon became a special favorite of my mom, especially as she sat beside her for all her prayer sessions. Slowly, in six months, a male cat arrived, begging for food one cold winter morning, and lapped off Toto’s remaining milk.

A bit of the story of finding out about transgender pets

Now, we had two cats, and they were in our home, which seemed to be a good place for animals. We were no longer in rented apartments or other cities in houses where neighbors constantly cribbed about your pets. I have stayed with a few good neighbors in some parts of the world where they knew the true meaning of co-existence.

I was feeling hope for the first time and tried my best to keep it good. Soon, in a month’s time, Fatty slept on a couch, and Toto slept on a rug. As time passed, Toto bore a child who got lost in a rainy afternoon when Toto, mistrusting his intentions, took the kitten out of our campus.

We were disappointed, but then she gave us another kitten in another 3 months. This time she listened, trusted us more, and kept the kitten in our garage. In 3 months, the kitten grew and then began jumping off windows on rainy nights. A mere 3-month-old cat could jump two-story windows, and our hearts melted. Soon, she was everywhere: on our beds and sofas, sleeping in between me and my sister.

We named her Lotto, and she brought together a kind of happiness we never knew we could have in our homes. I had the joy of having pets, and after our dog died, I swore at the age of seven that I would never have dogs again in my house.

But this time, it was cats.

The story of the coming of the transgender cat continues.

I couldn’t deny them a place, and now they are kind of a part of us we don’t know how to live without. Though, time and again, Lotto’s children migrate in search of greener pastures and boundaries, some stay back.

We have obnoxious neighbors when it comes to pet handling. My dog was lost since my neighbor did not keep him when he ran off from the pet care home.

I lost cats earlier when I stayed in a rented apartment, and the landlord was a beast of a man who made me divert two kittens when they were just four months old. He laughed at my plight and held a police officer on guard in front of the home until I abided by what he said.

I could have called animal rights then, but I knew he would turn it into a nasty fight, and my old mother was in no position to take so much. People said I fought for petty things like cats with people who helped me with their home.

But then this time, it is my home, and even though my neighbors often lock them off or hurt them to scare them off, I keep them because I know I have not been having them as pets but only caring for them because I did not buy them.

I keep the animal rights in loop to not have my neighbors mount unwanted pressure on the poor animals.

But this blog is not my personal experience instead; it is about a cat that seems to behave like a she cat, and male cat’s hunch on him. He is a male cat with distinct female behavioral patterns.

It seems like a transgender cat—the first transgender pet for us.

Things to know about transgender pets

When I researched, I found a lot about them, and the vet too confirmed it.

But he is happy currently, and I don’t see the need to do anything with him. I believe in self-expression and love the way it is able to self-express itself. Since there are no physical differences, we decided to leave him a male who behaves like a female. She has also found a few suitors for herself, and we are now feeding all of them whenever they come.

Is it possible to have transgender pets?

There are a few essential factors to consider when adopting transgender pets! If you don’t differentiate between cats based on their gender or sexual orientation, you will very much have a cat with you as normal as any other cat.

  1. Transgender pets are more emotionally vulnerable. We would need to give them the same love and care that is given to every other cat.
  2. Differentiating them can leave them feeling lonely, and they might want to abandon your homes before they are even ready for the world.
  3. They have a very high EQ. Once, her sister caught a fishbone in her mouth and stayed without consuming even water for five days. We could not catch her, as she would not let any of us touch her. As a cat, her personality is very different, and the closest she has ever been to me is just a few high fives over a span of time.

We had to catch her, and my mother did a great job of doing so. When we caught her, we put her in a box and carried her to a vet, who removed the fishbone and saved the young girl’s life. The day we brought her back, our trans-cat ate and drank for the first time.

For five days, she too did not touch food or water.

Few more points to remember!

  1. The cat community accepts such variations and is quite cool about it. In fact, her mother and father don’t stop her or feel ashamed of having her when she leaves with her suitors.
  2. They are perfectly normal animals, and normality has nothing to do with one’s sexual orientation.
  3. Her gestures and behavior towards us are softer now, and she would never extend her claws on me, no matter how much I play with her or run behind her.
  4. They are supernormal pets, and you’d love to have them.
  5. Above all, treat them with respect and dignity; they are just cats doing their things.

What are examples of transgender animals?

There are several transgender animals, and almost in every animal fraternity, transgender animals can be seen.

Lizards, beetles, fish, snakes, cats, lions, dogs, clownfish, slipper limpets, chickens, bearded dragons, and even spotted hyenas

Every animal has a transgender community, and no animal community in the world sees them differently.

There are some interesting historical facts to know about them.

Certain interesting historical facts you might want to consider if you plan to adopt transgender pets are here. There is no harm in taking up a transgender pet, as they are a normal pet to you, and there is nothing that their orientation can do to harm you unless you are planning to have more kittens or plan to sell the kittens for a living or business.

  1. The transgender dog Thomas was born in the year 2000, and though he was born male, he behaved like a female. He was transitioned to female with hormonal injections.
  2. In 2003, a cat named Mew in the US was a male and behaved like a female cat, and Mew was transitioned to a female cat with hormones.

The recorded history is not that long, as they are least observed except in certain recent cases. But if you have a cat and you don’t know their orientation, it would be wise to find out more about the identification features from here.

How do you identify a transgender pet?

  1. Presentation is the key, and if you can find out the way your pet behaves, you can know a lot. Males behave like females, and vice versa.
  2. Carefully observe their genitals and find out if they have both or ill-developed ones. You can ask a vet for help if you want to.
  3. Gender-related health issues will be very few in these pets, and that way you don’t have to worry much, which is also a pro in itself.

If you have one, do not differentiate between them when you identify a transgender pet in your home. Differentiation can make things bad. Respect their needs and also seek the help of a vet to tackle their vulnerabilities.

Love, support, and care for your pet without considering their gender.

What more I found about them is coming in a separate post.

If you have stories of transgender pets, you can email us your stories with a short bio and a picture of either your pet or you, and we would happily share them as a guest post on our site.

Rise in global temperature crosses 2 degree Celsius?

global temperature rise.

No one except a small kid of less than four is unaware of climate change, and global temperature rise,

and everyone knows we are the predators doing it.

But no one wants to stop here.

They want to keep doing it, as there is no other way to handle the population rise. As owners of this Earth, we deserve everything even if it is at the cost of what keeps us safe, our children, and our future.

But there is a limit to everything and the Earth’s thinning patience is well evident through the climatic catastrophes that walk hand in hand with us now.

Undoubtedly, it is elated now as the Earth knows humans are a race that can dig their graves.

Despite knowing it, the Earth is still merciful and is not allowing the waters to engulf us whole.

Leaving for another planet seems to be the only way for this currently thriving human race.

Below we will review our sources to find out what changes will lead to what kind of atmospheric orientations.

What happens as the temperature rises one by one degree?

  • Pre-industrial area <> today: The global temperature rise was already there and we were at a degree higher than normal when we began this century.
  • Next, the temperature rose by another 0.5 degree Celsius and these are the following impacts we had to face- we called it global warming.
Impact of global temperature rise by 1.5 degreeImpact list
Clean water shortageImpacted 350 million
Arctic snow melting leading to ice-free summersAt least one in 100 years
Rise in sea level40 centimeter
Vertebrate population decline4-5% decline will be automatic
Vegetation loss8-10% loss of vegetation
Insect loss6%-8%
Transformation of ecosystems7% changes will be noticed in the flora and the fauna
Permafrost melting4.8 million kilometer square of land ice will melt
Reduction in crop output3% reduction in crop output is seen
Coral reef loss70-90%
Fishing losses1.5 million tons of less fish
Heatwaves and extreme heat conditions14%

What will happen when there is a 2 degree rise in global temperature?

Congratulations! We stand there now as the era of global warming has given way to global boiling.

What happens if world temperature rises 2 degrees?

Changes due to 2-degree rise in global temperatureImpact listComparative worsening %
Water shortage410 million people will be impactedWorse by 14%-15%
Ice-free summers in the Arctic1 every 10 yearWorsened by 10 times
Sea level rise46-50 centimeter6-20 centimeters more
Decline in vertebratesBy 8-9%The difference will be double
Natural loss of plants from our ecosystem16%Double of what is lost at 1.5 degrees Celsius
Insect loss18%-20%Triple or more
Ecosystem loss13%-14%Twice as worse
Permafrost lossAbout 6.6 kilometer square loss38% to 40% worsening
Crop production decline7% declineWorsening will be 2-3 times
Coral reefs99% will be lostWorsens by 30% roughly
Fishing outputUp to 3 million tonsAlmost double than now
Heat impact37% population would be exposed to extreme heatAlmost double to 1.5 degree Celsius changes

Why shouldn’t you know what will happen when 3 degree Celsius rise is noted?

The limits will break, bridges will be broken and burnt, and the gaps between man and Nature will widen and worsen.

No longer will Mother Earth see us as her children but will indeed term us as her enemies.

She will rebel against her sons and daughters.

  1. Prolonged heatwaves
  2. Water levels as higher by 3 times almost can rise upto 120 centimeters.
  3. Death and drying/desiccation of Amazon rainforests
  4. Life losses will begin and be far higher than what we are losing now, all forms of life including humans.
  5. We will either live as they showed in the film Reminiscence or like 2012. It could also be like any of the dystopian movies but most likely will begin where Reminiscence sets its scenes.

Had we not taken this route and experimented with another way of living what could happen?

Could we have saved ourselves from the influence of the global temperature rise?

If you think carefully there are far better ways to survive and indeed, greater ways to manage resources here on Earth.

  • Why would humans choose to live the way they live?
  • Why would they stop experimenting and fix on this as the only way to survive here is a baffling question? Our ancestors are not here to answer it and we have lost many keys to them.

What can we do to change everything including solving the issue of global temperature rise?

Usurp everything we built and devise a new way of living.

We learn from our memories to choose better and not repeat them cyclically. The Earth moves round and round does not mean we too have to follow it.

To start with, despite not being a lawmaker, how about beginning at the grassroot level?

This one small action from all of us can change the way we look at the world and other fellow human beings forever including the global temperature rise crisis.

For example, we could easily have stopped the world from becoming an opulent land.

Too much goes into show off and who are we showing off?

Of course, our fellow humans!

What can we do to begin the change in the global temperature rise?

  • If we could only stop people from showing off who we are on this Earth to each other, we think a lot of resources can be saved and channelized towards mitigating hunger, water crisis, and other issues.
  • Saving animals instead of killing them, using their flesh, bones, and blood to bathe humanity and turn each one’s hands red is definitely not looking good for the world.
  • Building more stable infrastructures and planning a future on the other planet can only be possible if we stop using every resource to showcase our nasty powers.

What or how this process can be taken up is another topic but what matters most is to provide every sleeping human the information about temperature rise consequences and climate change.

People around certain places are still treating it as small due to their inability to think big.

Humans probably imitate animals in terms of the way their thinking works.

Every time, I meet a cat, I observe they are incapable of standing and defending other cats from their cats.

I always feel if we could end ways of differentiation and become a single species working towards each other’s progress, and life could always have been so different.

But, no one will see such a human race and Gods have accepted, replacing humans to rule this planet was indeed a wrong choice they made for it Human endeavor to elope this planet is the only ardent and prudent choice humans can take now. Humanity together with the good and the bad is facing an existential crisis and people who are trying to pull us away from this planet to another one are, of course, doing a favor to the human race’s existence and also the Earth’s existence including the problem of global temperature rise.

19 sustainable materials for building in 2024

Sustainable materials for building

Liten to the audio below

The world is evolving and deteriorating, natural resources are becoming scarce while artificial resources are increasing manifold around us. Artificial resources are basically manmade materials and off late, there is a huge spike in these goods and materials around us. Building and construction debris is increasing manifold owing to the population’s steep curve. In such situations, we are here today to explore 18 sustainable materials for building homes and workplaces in 2024.

It is estimated that almost 8.5 billion tons of plastic is currently present in the world which is about the size of 55 million jumbo jets. Artificially produced fibers are also accounting for this plastic mass of which 8 to 10 million end up in the oceans every year. You can imagine the amount of microplastics available in the sea and what amount we consume everyday when we skim out a fresh harvest of fish.

More than 500 years will be needed to degrade the current plastic masses available around us. There is a steep rise in plastic production and in 2021 alone according to Statista data, 400 million tons of plastic was manufactured compared to 2 million tons in 1950. The very first plastics can still be around is what scientists across the world predict.

Major highlights around plastic leading to a shift in the construction industry

Years to decompose the current plastic content500 years from now
Plastic amount total8.5 billion tons
Ocean debris amount8 to 10 million tons
Amount manufactured in 2021400 million tons
Plastic amount in 19502 million tons
Plastic bottles purchased each yearOne million
Plastic grocery bags each year5 trillion bags
Annual shipment industry plastic consumption$600 billion in 2021
Annual plastic waste350 million tons
Plastic generation prediction by 20601 billion metric tons

With factors influencing the market other than plastic’s increased footprint, below you find a few more reasons.

Factors influencing the construction shift other than the rise in plastic burden

With these factors contributing to differing choices, you can only see how people are evolving;

  • increased carbon footprint of concrete buildings,
  • sand shortage and stricter rules around the sand business,
  • cement production cost price increase and
  • lack of good mud for brick production, the building production home is manifold now compared to where it was in the last 10 years.

What can you do about it? Most architects and builders are designing and using alternative materials to add to the sustainability score. Thus, here we will discuss a few sustainable materials for building in 2024 that can help you immensely when thinking of creating your own space.

  1. Stones have found a way again

Even though we no longer stay in stone houses, but, you can still make houses from stones. They just do not add to the difference but are being considered by many architects and civil engineers as cheap and ready-made sustainable materials for building resources.

Mentionable designers using stones as a sustainable material for building;

  • Earthitects– India
  • Peter Rich Architects– South Africa

Why should you build with stones? Here are a few essential benefits;

  • Low carbon emission is the call of the hour and stones are one of the best sustainable materials for building to work in 2024.
  • You can find stones to be extremely durable to heat, cold, water, fire, bugs, and rots.
  • Stones themselves have a different structure and design and you don’t need anything else.
  • Insulation capacity is much higher than concrete.
  • Non-toxic in every way. Do you know the paint you use at home is toxic and the air around becomes toxic? What you breathe matters the most.

2. Mud houses

Old days are gone but mud houses have not lost their charm. With the current architects making beautiful designs out of mud, you can only dream of a differently built house. Mud is one of the most sustainable building materials and can be of wonderful use in the coming year.

You’d ask if bricks are made of mud too then why not use mud bricks? Brick manufacturing itself is done in a kiln and the temperature and carbon waste increase hugely. Carbon emission lessening is the first target, the next being the reduction of waste production from building a concrete structure apart from the aim to make buildings more durable.

Notable Architects putting mud to good use in India;

  • Sketch Design Studio
  • Karnath Design Studio, Surajkund, Haryana

The benefits of using mud as a prime building material include;

  1. Mud walls can withstand earthquakes better and also cause less damage to lives upon facing one.
  2. Insulation property is high for them.
  3. Fire and heat resistant
  4. Low production and maintenance cost
  5. Extremely natural soundproofing abilities
  6. Absolutely eco-friendly in nature

3. Scrap Construction

Can you imagine a house built of scraps? From your child’s pencil shavings to left out ice cream sticks to your scrap wood and plywood?

Houses are being constructed of waste debris and these houses are constructed as strongly as your concrete houses.

Michael Reynolds Earthship is a beautiful start to this incredible construction journey. We all know Can Brick and the imagination lightening up at its mention and the mere wandering of how it might be staying in such a house.

Benefits are encircling around the cheap availability of construction materials and the immensely decreased cost of the house’s production.

  • There is no shortage of garbage around us and we might soon be living in our homes surrounded by many forms of garbage. Using them in the right way can not only reduce it from overpouring into us.
  • Amazing shapes and designs are easy.
  • Most importantly, evacuation will not be mentally painful as a man won’t be worried about leaving behind a cheap home he once lived in rather than an opulent palace of gold, silver, and concrete.

4. Bamboo is the next generation sustainable material for building

Bamboo has received international attention in various countries where it is widespread like Japan, India, Vietnam, and even China.

Vo Trong Nghia and his work with bamboo is amazing. Why would someone use a green resource when the wood is going out of the market slowly, someone might argue in their heads.

The reason lies in the fact that bamboo has a few advantages over other trees and thus growing and using them is being largely considered. We will have a close look at the reasons below;

  • Bamboo grows really fast and all you need is suitable soil and enough sunlight plus a little water. Some species of bamboo can grow as much as 2.91 feet in a single day and that is according to the Guinness World Records. Since growing them is easy and fast, the world is considering this green plant for building and construction.
  • The high tensile strength of bamboo is considered as essential in construction and can be used as scaffolding when creating skyscrapers.
  • Bamboo is earthquake resistant and with the Eurasian plate moving towards the Asian counterpart, you can expect more and more Earthquakes. Recently, Iceland recorded 1000 earthquakes before volcanic eruption prediction and also other earthquakes all around the world. It might only grow in the coming times.
  • An extremely cheap alternative bamboo can significantly bring down the cost of construction and that way helps more and more people to own houses and build homes.
  • Bamboo is a versatile resource and has more than one use.

5. Nature living material

Building homes of living materials is another way and in recent times, it is being used as a sustainable material for building in 2024.

Trees are a beautiful resource and can be woven together to make homes that not only provide you with a perfectly natural environment but also bring you close to Nature.

Microorganisms are also another way of building homes and are a part of the living building material ensemble.

Different heterotrophs and autotrophs are currently being used in building construction and right now there are several ongoing researches and research papers around it.

Bacterial scaffolding is being targeted and Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 is one of the currently studied bacterial species. Ideally even Escherichia coli is also used in building and housing construction.

The benefits of using living materials as sustainable materials for building in 2024 are not sans its benefits.

  • No toxic waste creation is possible with the living material when used for sustainability.
  • Energy efficiency is higher when we use living building materials as they can prevent heat escape thereby reducing the overall cost spent on heating our houses.
  • Green roofs can not only act as low carbon emitters but also can be used for capturing increased carbon content available in the atmosphere.
  • Air quality can improve as the inside air will be non-toxic and free of any kind of chemical content or heavy particulate matter.
  • Water as a resource can become scantier with passing days and these living buildings can conserve water effortlessly.

6. Editor’s choice: Steel as a sustainable material for building

Steel is not on the side of concrete when it comes to building houses. Steel is a green source and a sustainable material for building and it will remain that way in the coming years.

It is one of the cliche products in the market contributing towards green production. Almost 8% of the carbon dioxide production in the atmosphere is from the production of steel and yet, post production it is one of the most sustainable materials for building.

Iconic architecture and Frank Gehry are synonymous.

The benefits of using steel, a man made material, are many and if the fine balance between its production and use are not kept in balance, we don’t know which side might seem to sink from the sheer weight of it.

  1. Recycling steel is known to be the chief reason architects consider it for green building. It is the best and the most recycled material in the world.
  2. Noone can deny its durability and it is one of the best durable materials around apart from being the most stylishly used material.
  3. With steel, there can be a massive reduction in the construction time.
  4. Energy efficiency and cost can come down imaginably with the use of steel.
  5. Carbon emission reduction and energy cost reduction are massively cut through the use of steel in construction and is one of the best sustainable materials for building in 2024.

7. Timber Homes

Timber is also another useful element for making sustainable homes. But timber is resourced from fine woods and chopped trees. It is one of the finest houses that timber can make but a personal recommendation from our end would not include it. Since trees are dying and so is the Nature. One of the essential ingredients to keep Nature as it is will require trees. Thus, you can think of using anything listed here to make a home. A home is made by the humans who live in it and of course, if you can keep your home clean there is nothing that can stop you from having one.

You can make timber of both gymnosperms and angiosperms trees. Timber is definitely the best in the lot when it comes to maintaining appropriate insulation in our homes, and also when considering design and architecture, it does not need much.

8. Natural insulating materials for homes

  • Sheep’s wool for cold climates: You can make the walls of anything and then cover them with sheep’s wool. Not only can cold country people survive better, but they can also require far less to spend on keeping themselves warm.
  • Straw Bales to keep the cold out: Straw bales can also keep your home warm if you can use them aesthetically in your homes.
  • Polyurethane rigid foam for hot and cold countries: Hemp and bamboo can be used for making the material and since it is a plant based one, you can always use it for green living. Keep the molds and pests away and use it for heat resistance and sound insulation. A perfect sustainable material for building in 2024.

9. Adobe is a hot favorite among many

Adobe is earth mixed with water and other substances which contribute to its increased resistance and flexibility. Use bricks made of Adobe instead of clay baked in a brick kiln and create houses with mud, Adobe, and mortar.

Messner Mountain Museum architecture designed by Zaha Hadid is an impeccable example of its use.

The Conciliation Chapel in Berlin, Germany is built of Adobe entirely.

Benefits of Adobe use would include the following;

  • Individual brick units shrink before being placed on the wall and that way Adobe is one of the best sustainable materials for building. This process would prevent the shrinking of walls, and also keep them from cracking.
  • Extremely durable and flexible, points which are absent with concrete.
  • Adobe can offer appropriate insulation and adequate thermal mass.
  • Highly fire resistant, Adobe is also extremely energy efficient.

10. Cork is a natural element

Cork can be grown quickly and has recently been recognized as a sustainable material that you can use to build your houses and homes.

There are several benefits of manufacturing cork homes. Here are a few given below;

  • The tree can grow and keep producing more cork which can be harvested and the tree would yield more which means there can be a continuous supply of it.
  • Flexible, resilient, and quite capable of sustaining pressure, it can be one of the most sustainable materials for building in 2024.
  • Excellent noise absorber, cork can function in the best possible way for heat insulation.
  • Cork will never rot as it does not absorb any water.

11. Hemp concrete

Lightweight and easy transportation is what is alluring architects to use hemp wherever it is found in countries and localities.

Hemp cretes are strong, offer great sound and thermal insulation, and never leave carbon footprints. It is carbon dioxide negative which means it will absorb carbon dioxide more than release it.

Also, hemp can be grown quickly which will mean the market demand can be met easily.

12. Eat and build mushrooms

Mycelium, the vegetative part of mushrooms combined with computational technology can weave wonders and can create bricks for homes. This photo is a 40 feet courtyard of the art gallery in New York at MoMA PS1.

Mix corn husks and mycelium together to create these incredible bricks. Once mixed, the mixture is added to the brick mold and they are then grown for five days at a stretch. Bricks are layered one above the other and through the use of an algorithm customized completely in this regard.

Even agricultural wastes can be used and the best part of the construction is that they are completely biodegradable.

Rice hulls can be used alongwith mycelium to construct bricks.

13. Ferrock

A relatively new product in the market, Ferrock is a combination of steel dust collected from the steel industry and iron rock chips left out from the industrial processes. The iron rock chips are usually used in landfills.

What can you expect if you mix iron and steel- a concrete harder than concrete itself?

Benefits that can make Ferrock the Generation Z product include the benefits mentioned below.

  • Ferrock concrete emits carbon but is less than actual concrete.
  • Resilience to weather is more than any other form of sustainable form.

14. Timbercrete

Mix sawdust and concrete is mixed and it can reduce the weight of concrete making it lightweight and yet strong.

15. Bricks from human urine- Editor’s Choice

The University of Cape Town found if sand is mixed with bacteria, you can get urease. Urease is an enzyme that can break down (through hydrolysis) urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. Calcium carbonate can be produced in the mixture as the carbon dioxide reacts with the plenty of calcium which turns to calcium carbonate in large amounts. The longer the bacteria is kept on the brick, the harder the brick becomes, and its durability and tensile strength increase manifold.

Suzanne Lambert, a CapeTown University researcher has voiced her favor for these bricks as they can completely eliminate urine waste issues foraying towards a zero waste principle. Also, the bricks would be capable of making houses far more strong and energy efficient.

The calcification process is known as the microbial carbonate precipitation technique.

Mass production estimation of these bricks is unknown and it is still not known when they can be mass produced. Anyone searching for bricks 40% stronger than ordinary limestone bricks can always go for these.

Dyllon Randall, Lambert’s supervisor claims it is the same process as the one used for the sea shell formation in nature.

The earliest credit for the project goes to Jules Henze, a Swiss student who worked 4 months with Randall on the concept in 2017. Vukheta Mukhari, a civil engineering honors student in UCT conducted the tests and took over testing the material.

Breakdown of the process

16. Roofing Shingles

Roofing shingles made from asphalt can save your day. Even laminated or weather wood roofing shingles can work well.

Overlapping elements used for covering the roof are widely in use and though not a new way an innovative carry forward way to building firm constructions in the future.

17. Zero-carbon cement

Limestone, calcium, silicon, iron, and aluminum cement can reduce carbon emissions by 5% when used in construction. It would be the best sustainable material for building in 2024 in places where natural elements still cannot replace the building industry.

There is even 0 cement concrete and can save 88% of CO2 emissions. Concrete Canvas and Cemfree are two companies already manufacturing such cement. Anglia Water has already used this zero-carbon cement from Cemfree.

Instead of heating limestone to 400 degrees Celsius using fossil fuels, you can now use electrolysis to migrate calcium ions to the cathode once they are produced in the anode by a series of chemical reactions involving the breakdown of water into hydrogen and oxygen followed by reaction of the acid with a base.

In anode at 12.5 pH, calcium hydroxide is produced and is also known or has been ever since known as the builder’s lime or slaked lime.

Calcium can come from magnesium, silica, aluminum, and even iron.

18. Eat and build from potatoes but never become a couch potato

Chip[s] Board® is into making products from potato scraps. It will heavily cut down on food waste and globally 1.3 billion tons of food gets wasted every year. The UK company is inspired by a circular economy and the food waste is used to generate sustainable building materials.

19. Air purifying façade

Pureti-treated panels are placed on Neolith and produce hygroscopic and photocatalytic ways to react with sunlight and moisture in the air.

PureTi is nothing but 99% water and 1% encapsulated water with nano titanium oxide.

Does pollution have ways of reduction? Does the future have hopes? We can only hope it has.

Here we discuss 19 sustainable materials for building and construction for 2024. Consider them as a designer, builder, and people who want to live opulently and differently by contributing positively to the environment.

Self-cleaning is what we can easily do with PureTi. We are out into the new world!

Wrap Up

Here is what we can understand about building and the next-generation sustainable materials for building from here. Consider them as they can save your day and pocket, give you a home, a much more beautiful one than you can make one for yourself with concrete. Think out of concrete and surround yourself well to live well in this age of pollution and environmental decay and yet add meaning to the world.

    Marine Conservation Laws in India

    Marine Conservation laws in India

Humans have scavenged other beings for generations and due to the being’s non-participation in an active way in this process, the other beings we call animals have been killed more than us in the process. If we have to understand it, often force needs to be applied to people who do not understand by those who do understand. It is where governments have etched out laws that can work and function in the best ways for us and them. Not that we are rigorously following all the rules but due to the rules in place, we know we can reach out to someone if we do not see them happening in the right way.

India is a country with one of the biggest coastlines where a chunk of the population earns from their marine businesses. Most are fishermen or small fishing industry units across the entire coastal line of the country.

The mainland extension of the coastline in India is 6100 kilometers and when the islands are included it stretches up to 7517 kilometers.

Did you know India is the second largest exporter of seafood and we stand second only to China?

With this kind of massive area being covered under the coastal belt, it is very obvious that marine life constantly comes in contact with human life.

Certain government laws exist in our country which is meant to safeguard marine lives.

These following government laws can help you understand the marine conservation laws available in our country.

    1. The Wildlife Protection Act of India: Protecting marine animals is possible through this act and it entails almost 31 main marine protected areas. This law covers the protection measures of many animals.
    2. The coastal regulation zone was established in 1991 and under this law; the government prevents development activities in fragile coastal ecosystems. Alongwith it, the law also prohibits disposal of water in these areas under this law.
    3. A national committee exists for maintenance of mangroves, wetlands, and coral reefs. It was formed in 1993 and is responsible for advising the government on different programs and policies.
    4. The government is advised on matters related to conservation, protection, biodiversity, sustainable use, and sharing of marine products by the Biological Diversity Act of India, 2002, and the Biological Diversity Rules 2004.
    5. The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) plans to establish sustainable and responsible fishery sector development in India. Their primary objectives include harnessing the potential of fisheries in an appropriate manner and robust fisheries management and framework regulation.
    6. The Ministry of Earth Sciences and Center for Marine Living Resources and Ecology is following marine living resource management through the monitoring of ecosystems and also via the development of different modeling activities. Based on 24 years of surveys, they have developed India’s exclusive economic zone and also marked several conservation hotspots in the country.

    Marine Protected Areas

Next, we would know the major marine protected areas available across different states in our country. It shows the efforts that have been made to protect the marine environment as a whole. Marine conservation is essential and these protected areas stand to testify more of the efforts made.

    StateProtected Area
West BengalSunderbans including its western side, Holiday Island, Sajnakhali, Lothian Island
OdishaGahirmatha, Chilika (Nalabana), Balukhand Konark, Bhitarkanika
    Andhra PradeshKrishna, Coringa, Pulicat Lake
Tamil NaduPoint Calimere, Gulf of Mannar
    KeralaKadalundi-Vallikkunnu (Community Reserve)
    MaharashtraMalvan Marine Wildlife Sanctuary
    GoaChorao Island
    GujaratKhijadia, Gulf of Kachchh

But just protecting a few areas is not enough. The Indian Ocean faces marine pollution threats and real-time pollution every day. With each passing day, it is on the rise. In the next segment, we bring you the reasons for marine pollution other than plastics that also need strict maintenance with the setting of different laws and regulations.

Different apparent causes of marine pollution preventing marine conservation efforts

     The marine conservation despite these laws in place takes a dip almost every day. Different reasons abound which disturb such an arrangement. Some of the most plausible causes include the following;

    • Sewage and its disposal in oceans
    • Plastic dumps in oceans lead to the deposition of microplastics in fish flesh
    • Oil spills are plentiful
    • Ocean mining is being done for gold, silver, copper, cobalt, and zinc is underway even in India. Sulfide is the major trash of these processes and deposition happens up to half a thousand meters under the oceans.
    • Foreign ships entering the Indian Ocean are another major reason for increased pollution
    • Effective incorporation of blue economy programs in the country needs to be resolved.

To solve these issues, what can be done is directed below and is suggestive of changes that can better facilitate the work of the organizations.

    1. The working between the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Ministry of Agriculture (Department of Fisheries), and the Ministry of Defence (the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy) must be made collaborative to ensure better marine life safety and preservation of marine laws in a better way.
    2. Establishing blue economy zones particularly to solve the marine pollution issue and not to make it a part of any of these Blue Economy programs is required.
    3. The plastics banned are only upto a certain thickness but there needs to be tighter implementation of laws and rules.
    4. Ocean mining waste of sulfide needs to be disposed of in the right way and it must not be getting into the flesh of the fishes. If it happens, the flesh will carry the poison impacting no one but us in the process.

    Conclusion

If you think you want to know more about the Indian laws and regulations, here is a consolidated list of marine conservation laws in India as well as the challenges that are created from time to time around this aspect of life and living. You can go through the list of laws and refer to each one separately from their sites to have a firm grip on the issues.

An end to end plan and a robust attempt to end this kind of pollution might take ages but something needs to reduce by the next 10 years and not increase. Someone has to stand by these marine beings and know if we are being left at the top of the food chain, we must act and behave like one protecting and preserving lives under us and not letting them get wasted in our makeup industries and textile industries but instead only using and channeling them to the most essential industries like food and drugs.

13 marine life sustainability and ocean sustainability projects

    marine life sustainability

Read more on what oceans are for us- what is marine life sustainability and ocean sustainability?

Making marine life more sustainable and working towards ocean sustainability is the current goal.

324 billion cubic kilometers of water is what the Earth is which means it is 97% of water and only 3% of land.

The only planet in our solar system that visibly contains liquid water.

Oceans are divided into two layers of which the abyssal plains consist of 30% of the ocean floor. The ocean crust is a thin layer made of basalt and the abyssal plains are the flattest features on Earth.

    Divided into four zones, the oceans give way to;

    1. Epipelagic,

    2. Mesopelagic and

    3. Bathypelagic zone

    4. The deepest zone is the hadalpelagic zone.

All of these layers contribute to ocean sustainability and marine resource sustainability.

    • According to the United Nations Sea Treaty, there is an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) that extends by 200 nautical lines beyond a country’s coastline.
    • Countries that are not part of the treaty need to also consider it as part of the marine conservation effort being made by the governments.
    • Ocean current generators and ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) are two ways we obtain energy from the aquatic environment that already is enough disturbance towards the aquatic environment.
    • Undersea mining is the buzzword but it is a cost we are paying and the cost is disruption of the ecological balance of that local area. One area is disturbed and it leads to the disturbance in other areas.
    • It also threatens the survival of different endangered species and already available species. If you know about Maui’s dolphins for example at risk from undersea mining and many other such species.
    • Pollution of the oceans will increase rapidly from this process and we will have to freshly think of ocean sustainability issues.

What kind of pollution is already inside we are aware. But this is new kind- fresh oil and what it can do to us is a question that needs answering if we plan to still be on the planet.

Where are we in terms of marine life sustainability?

We are right now not well placed as the number of endangered species are rising every year. It means each year one or the other species is being hunted down so brutally that its almost coming to a point of extinction.

The world looks grim in terms of endangered species which means marine life sustainability has gone for a toss. It needs collective and effective support structure right now to further lower the endangered species number.

Here is a graphical representation of the countries that have witnessed more number of endangered species.

    What is marine life sustainability

Marine life sustainability is an issue that needs to kick into our consciousness hard and we need to understand very well that the coming times will have to be a sustainable world. But since none of us grew up worrying about the environment which gave us till now, we have no idea how to give back to it.

Most people would rather attend a meeting than water a tree, burn a cracker to celebrate a festival, a day they would barely remember in their lives than live without it. In a world of need and greed, show and power, humans are caught in a never-changing grip, and in this grip they live and die barely knowing about the simpler times, more straight things.

Not knowing is not a sin but ignoring knowledge so essential definitely is a sin in its way. We almost every day ignore it as our pains become bigger with time. But we avoid something so important sitting and waiting for us to repair us.

    Ocean sustainability

Some people are trying their best and here are 12 underwater projects working towards creating ocean sustainability. These might work in the right direction in bringing hope to the aquatic world and the rest of us who live. Those who aspire to live not in fear of submergence under water one day but want to live to hold our heads high that we have saved the water world from getting angry at us way beyond what we can behold.

Here are some of the running underwater projects that have gained prominence and have received grants for standing out. These projects are trying to make way for marine ecosystem conservation. But given, that we are just a few feet above the flood line, it would be essential to find out what or which projects are working quickly to achieve their targets.

    1.      ARC Marine Products for marine life sustainability

It brings two incredible products to the forefront and these are the reef cubes and the Marine Matt for enhancing marine life sustainability.

    More about Reef Cubes:

      2. It can help protect life and help in aquaculture, providing coastal defense, helps in reef conservation, and eco-engineering, and also provides subsea protection.
      3. They aspire to cure the reef damage that is widely prevalent across different oceans. Though they will replace the reefs that have been in place for millions of years, there has to be a solution to the destruction that is underway and this could be one.
      4. They help the undersea and ocean cable lines and that particular action prevents their damage and also causes damage to the aquatic world.
      5. The reef cubes allow a porous surface and thus the pure substrate for marine growth. Like the plastic reefs need regular removal, these reef cubes will not require regular removal.

      Features of these Reef Cubes:

The following marine life sustainability features support the making of the reef cubes so essential and prominent.

      1. It has an eco-centric design: They carve a design as per your marine needs and as per the biodiversity requirements.
      2. Biological monitoring is done using techniques like eDNA, baited video, ROV, and diver surveys.

They bring a new way of looking at marine life and with the passing time make it easy to initiate an establishment around the seas and the oceans.

        3.      Kelp Blue for marine life sustainability

We are using natural resources more than ever before. Under such circumstances, we are not letting the renewal happen in the right way and thus toppling the marine resource sustainability issue. If we need to arrange for a renewal, we need to understand something more essential. We need to derive our products from resources that are easily available around us. They grow without much effort and much use of natural resources.

What can require almost nothing yet grow remarkably well around us?

Kelp is known to be a wonder plant. It can grow without the use of any land, fresh water resources, and pesticides or fertilizers are what we need to look into.

It is an organization that has been making a huge leap in this direction.

Kelp is a plant which is in use as food and fodder for many centuries now.

They grow kelp in large numbers and then isolate their products that can be used by the masses at all times easily.

        Some of the most essential products that come out of kelp and work towards marine resources sustainability issue are;

        1. Production of biostimulant which helps crops get out of climatic stress, and also enhances their productivity.
        2. Fucoidan found in kelp can act as a pre-biotic that serves the role of anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant levels.
        3. Animal feed is what it can be used for due to the heavy amount of fatty acids, fucoidans, carbohydrates, and so on.
        4. Alginates come easily from kelp and act in the food industry as food thickeners, biofilms, bio packaging units and so on. Alginates are known for their viscosity and are also easily degradable and compatible with other biological products.

        4.      Plant a Million Corals towards marine life sustainability

Corals are home to millions of different species but as we lose them to pollution and immense marine resource uses, we come to a point where we need to see if we can do something to save these populations. How are corals and these marine living beings useful? We might not know their real role but then they do have an incredible role around us.

Now with 20%-40% of the corals lost, Plant a Million Corals is one of the organizations that is doing incredible work in this direction. Dr. David Vaughan is capable of growing back the fast growing and resilient species they plan to successfully replenish them back.

Uses of corals for those who want to know more about their role?

        • Increasing and maintaining ocean biodiversity
        • They protect the coastlines
        • Not many might know but they keep a check on the air quality underwater. Even the air needs to be of a certain quality to ensure the maintenance of marine life.

With this step forward, the company aims to create more jobs in the coastal areas apart from raising awareness. Also, the company aims to derive inspiring natural solutions in the right way. This step could ensure there would be a dramatic decrease in the CO2 levels around and the efforts will restock the fish stocks comfortably.

        5.      Australian Seaweed Institute

While everyone is trying to make an impact, there is something that needs to be done more towards ocean conservation. Identifying this scenario, the Australian seaweed institute is on a mission to create a sustainable environment. Seaweeds have a special role in the environment.

They act as filters and protect every water body from water pollution. Especially the Great Barrier Reef and builds a protective environment around it.

The institute is working solely in Australia and plans to incorporate more seaweed in the catchment area to clear the waters of excessive carbon and nitrogen load before it enters the oceans.

The project is in the first phase of its multi-year development and is organized in conjunction with Central Queensland University’s Coastal Marine Ecosystem Research Center.

They have a 10-year plan and aim to bring about the following essential changes in the environment.

        • With the help of increased seaweeds, one can get nutrient pollution and ocean acidification process.
        • Increase the resilience of the reef to local climatic changes.
        • Enhance the biodiversity and improve water quality.
        • The seaweeds can add beneficial products to the farmers and this way helps reduce emissions.
        • The project plans to generate income for the future.

        The 10-year plan will incorporate the following steps towards creating sustainable oceans and seas;

        • Concept Design
        • Field Trials
        • Pilot Project initiation
        • Scaling up
        • Optimization process

        6.      SharkSafe Barriers for marine life sustainability

People are scared of sharks and even though they are harmless there are large incidences of sharks attacking humans as a whole. To avoid hurting marine life and to find a worthwhile solution to the problem, SharkSafe Barrier as an organization biomimics the thick kelp forest environment and also builds a strong magnetic field around the barriers to keep the sharks out of reach.

What do the SharkSafe Barriers do or benefit people from and how do they help in the creation of sustainable oceans and seas?

        1. It is an artificial reef that is environment friendly and offers visible protection from sharks.
        2. The boats do not get damaged in the process and all of it is built from recyclable and reusable materials.
        3. The barrier does not need electricity to operate.
        4. It is a no-risk zone for animals and is capable of protecting larger areas at a shot.
        5. A minimum maintenance zone, the barrier offers an equally high resilience.

        7.      WIPSEA

Wipsea is a marine life sustainability organization helping millions of environmentally attuned individuals with their work and in doing so managing and organizing different photos and videos all at the same time.

They have done research for almost 8 years. Meanwhile, they have helped station windmills off coastal areas, have contributed to natural parks, and have also built an app called Camera Trap that works wonders.

The app requires your device to be at least Windows 7 and with 8 GB memory, and comes with 7-hour support.

Natural parks can capture aerial images, conduct automatic photo analysis and produce density maps in the best ways.

        8.      Sea6 Energy

Established in Bengaluru, India, Sea6 Energy has become one of the pioneer industries in overcoming problems of the environment and running their programs on a global scale.

They focus on sea plant farming and produce it mechanically and also use the sea plant biomass to create newer products and have contributed largely towards marine life sustainability.

They also have an R&D team that brings out novel, patented products.

Bioplastics and biofuels (red macrophage valorization through hydrothermal liquefaction) are some product varieties.

Tropical seaweeds are some other such products which they help with.

        UNEP Funded Ocean sustainability projects

          9. FRAGMENTS OF HOPE FOR MARINE LIFE SUSTAINABILITY

Located in Placencia Peninsula, Fragments of Hope brings together the efforts of several humans who stand to build back the coral reef habitats and work towards marine life sustainability in their own way. They want to restore what is lost in this world and the fast-depleting aquatic world.

Their project is funded by UNEP and if you visit Belize, you can take a tour with them to understand more about what the organization is trying to offer to the world.

They focus on mangroves and coral reefs and consider them to be an interconnected ecosystem. Fragments of Hope plan to replenish it and want to build it back again. They work through people and employ different people from varied professions from time to time. If you want to be a part of this wonderful organization, you can tune in here for their link.

          10. PERRY INSTITUTE OF MARINE SCIENCES

They are one of the longest-standing organizations in the world and have offered help to the Marines for more than 50 years. Coral reefs, coastal habitats, and vital fisheries in the Bahamas, St.Lucia, Aruba, and the Caribbean are where they are working to bring forth more sustainable solutions. They are a 501 (c3) non-profit institution and work to benefit marine life sustainability and play a vital role in developing life in the best way.

            1. Fisheries
            2. Corals
            3. Research and conservation
            4. Coastal Ecosystem Research and Restoration

On every occasion, these ecosystems are working to the fullest to conserve, preserve, and manage the waters. If you want to conserve these communities, you must follow this group and work with them closely.

They are also funded by the UNEP and that way they stand out as a project from others.

            11. MISION TIBURON

Sharks are the guardians of the ocean and they are declining in population every day. They are hunted down brutally for their flesh, bones, and oils, and what humans use them for is sometimes not essential for human life. We waste these sharks and their valuable resources many times.

              If you want to know more about how sharks manage ocean sustainability, know this;

100 million sharks are killed every year and almost everyone is a victim of a bycatch somewhere. Not just killing is the challenge but also overfishing, habitat degradation, and slow reproduction process.

The organization is working on all four fronts to restore sharks in the best way.

              • Reducing their hunting counts
              • Stopping overfishing
              • Preventing their habitat degradation
              • Working towards growing their pups and juveniles ahead without being endangered by excessive hunting processes. The Shark sanctuary in Costa Rica was established with the help of the government and using it to prevent excessive hunting of the pups is what is being targeted by this UNEP funded organization.

              12. REPLANTING SEAGRASS FIELDS

The Gambia Department of Parks and Wildlife Management is the organization that works towards reversing the decline of the sea grasses in the area and help thereby the process of marine life sustainability. Even in Kenya organizations are working towards it. Especially the south western communities belonging to beach areas like Gunjur and Kartong.

The grant is taken and is to be implemented by Flora & Fauna International and the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute.

They will create a map for the core seagrass habitats and thereby increase the protection of plants, fish, turtles, and the Kenyan Dugong populations surviving in these seagrasses.

The organizations will also help restore the mangrove ecosystem which is an essential and inseparable part of maintaining the population of these seagrasses, and the marine aquatic habitat.

They are trying to manage the marine ecosystems southwest of Madagascar, Manjaboake, Teariake, and Velondriake. These areas are threatened by excessive destructive fishing habits especially beach seining.

Blue Ventures Conservation works towards managing ocean sustainability and plans to train different community members to manage, monitor, and map the seagrass in three different conservation areas. Their plan even extends to 150 fishers who are small-scaled and work on developing sea cucumbers and plan to diversify their incomes.  They are creating different blue zones where they are trying to spread the message for varied economic opportunities.

                13. C3 PHILIPPINES FOR MARINE LIFE SUSTAINABILITY

The Philippines is planning to conserve and sustain three coastal marine ecosystems thereby contributing to ocean sustainability largely- coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses in Green Island Bay. They work with different clients and organizations to make their work easier. C3 Philippines plan to create a change in the marine ecosystems and also to fund the coastal marine ecosystems in the best possible ways.

They plan to spread awareness through meetings and different kinds of training. Women of Tagbanua, a community in Calawit found a new way to resolve their ancestral homes. Declaring an area protected for marine life by C3 Philippines is a way forward. It is how the Ocam-Ocam group is working to conserve their areas.

                CONCLUSION

What can we learn from these programs except that we are trying to use them to live without worrying how they would live as they are as much living as we are? The result is a fear now, a palpable fear which can be seen rising everyday around us.

But there is also something more than this fear awaiting us and that is the coming of the water world. With barely 3% of it being land, we are planning sky high dreams. If we don’t plan a truce with the water kingdom, they may soon be all over us and we haven’t yet learned to live underwater.

All these marine life sustainability and marine conservation projects are trying to protect the aquatic environment but none is still there to make people know how to live underwater in the same way we live on Earth. Under such circumstances, calling a truce might be the wisest decision to partake at this juncture.
