Radiotherapy and chemotherapy come to mind as soon as you hear carcinoma (cancer treatment).
Why is it so? Are there no other alternative cancer treatment alternatives?
Till a few years back, scientists got busy finding out more about possible types of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
So, now we know there are different radiation doses, different chemotherapies, and their subsequent combinations.
Just one modality of treatment existed to date for cancer.
But now there are some more modalities, undoubtedly costly but existing models are capable of assuring a better cure.
1) Immunotherapy for carcinomas
A form of gene therapy has been allowed by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and is known as CAR T-cell therapy.
We have two types of lymphocytes– T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes.
Lymphocytes are one of the five types of white blood cells, the others being Monocytes, neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils.
Patient age group: Its use is currently possible in children and adults up to the age of 25 years.
Indication: B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Treatment level: Second level when all other therapies fail.
Is it available for adults?
Another version of it will soon be there for adults and even as another treatment modality for other cancer types.
2) Bringing precision medications
Targeted treatment is applicable for people at a certain stage of carcinoma or for certain forms of carcinoma inaccessible to radiation therapy and difficult to treat for chemotherapy. This sort of treatment makes the immune cell death lesser. Even bystander cells die less through this process, and less damage invokes less damage to the body too.
3) MRI guided focal laser ablation
A high beam of laser ray is shot at the cancer cells in your organs. It works wonderfully for prostate cancer patients. If the cancer is visible in an imaging scan, they can use the MRI guided focal laser ablation to destroy those cancer cells.
A new way of surgery where doctors prefer to freeze the operable part and then severed and is good for many organs. Cryoablation of lungs is better since that way people need not lose an entire lung.
5) Precision cancer treatment therapy
Precision therapy will help locate abnormalities at the genetic level. Destroying them at a genetic level can prevent the recurrence of cancer recreations at genetic levels.
6) Immunity checkpoint removal therapy
Recently scattering hope is a new type of therapy where checkpoint inhibitors within the body are removed by drugs which in turn allow the body cells to directly destroy their own cancer cells. The study has generated hopes for many who would not like to go through chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
7) Proton cancer treatment therapy
A proton beam is used to irradiate the cancerous tissue in the organs.
A bit about cancer reminds us, it is conquerable through various cancer treatments, but then every year we lose many to it. Sadly people don’t return, time and resources are lost, life risks build up as life sources mitigate.
It just does not kill one but takes many with it in one.
